Car Hire

There are a number of car hire firms on the Western Isles and we would be only too happy to advise.

If you would like to hire a bicycle, Alex Dan's Cycles can be contacted on 01851 704025. His shop is located in the town centre, at 67 Kenneth Street, Stornoway HS1 2DS. We can arrange transport for you to the shop.

There are no facilities for hiring motorbikes or scooters, on the island at present.

Arriving on foot?

We can provide you with details of local buses or taxis. The buses stop just at the top of our street, and the Hebrides' integrated bus and ferry transport system can be accessed at www.cne-siar.gov.uk/travel.htm. If you'd like to hire a car, you can contact www.hebrides-selfcatering.co.uk who can deliver a car to you at the airport, ferry terminal or at the house. We have local maps and guidebooks available in the guest dining room.

By Air

Stornoway is connected to the mainland by daily flights to the major Scottish airports. Sandwick Bay is around 10 minutes' drive from the modern and accessible Stornoway airport (airline code SYY), which offers free parking. The airport is owned and currently operated by Highlands and Islands Airports. The link below includes access to real-time flight arrivals and departures.

Highland Airways operate daily flights between Inverness and Stornoway.

Flybe (contracted to Loganair) operate regular flights, Monday to Saturday from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness to Stornoway, Barra and Benbecula. There are also Sunday flights between Stornoway and Glasgow.

Flying from overseas

When travelling from another country, you can book an international flight to Glasgow, Edinburgh or Inverness. Then book a connecting flight to Stornoway.

By Ferry

Sandwick Bay is a few minutes drive from the Stornoway ferry terminal and around an hour from the Tarbert, Harris ferry terminal. Please make sure you give yourself enough time to arrive at the ferry port before boarding commences - cutoff times vary according to how you are travelling, and ferry times vary according to the day of the week.

You can travel from Ullapool to Stornoway in less than 3 hours on the large and comfortable Calmac ferry, the " Isle of Lewis ". Alternatively you can choose the shorter crossing ( 1hr 40mins ) from Uig on Skye to Tarbert on Harris. During your journey across the Minch you can take in an array of islands, as well as carry out a bit of dolphin and porpoise spotting !
